2023 Pink Power

BY PINKY 2023/10/04

Data released by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), a part of the World Health Organization (WHO), in 2020 shows that breast cancer has become one of the most common cancers worldwide.

In U.S., about 240,000 cases of breast cancer are diagnosed in women and about 2,100 in men. About 42,000 women and 500 men in the U.S. die each year from breast cancer.

▋ High-Risk Groups for Breast Cancer

·         Family history of breast cancer

·         Previous diagnosis of breast cancer in one breast

·         History of ovarian cancer or endometrial cancer

·         Never given birth, never breastfed, or had their first child after the age of 30

·         Onset of menstruation before age 12 or menopause after age 55

·         Long-term use of hormone replacement therapy

·         Smoking or alcohol consumption habits

The above-mentioned groups have a slightly higher risk of developing breast cancer than the general population, but it's important to note that many patients still develop breast cancer without any of these risk factors.

Therefore, all women should remain vigilant about the health of their breasts and not underestimate the probability and threat of breast cancer.

In the face of the looming threat of breast cancer, regular breast cancer screening can lead to early detection, early treatment, and improved prognosis.

▋ Methods of Breast Cancer Detection

◎ Monthly self-examination

After the end of your menstrual period, around days 5-7, use visual and tactile methods to check the skin of the breast and armpit areas for wrinkles, indentations, the presence of any palpable lumps, and abnormal discharge.

Self-examination process

☑️Observe👀: Stand in front of a mirror with both hands behind your head and observe the size and symmetry of your breasts and nipples, as well as the presence of wrinkles, indentations, or nipple discharge. Lower your hands and repeat the observation.

☑️ Touch👋: Lie down and place your right hand under your head. Use your left hand to gently touch the entire right breast and armpit area in a circular motion, including above the collarbone, below the ribcage, and along the sternum. Begin with light pressure and then slightly increase it.

☑️ Gently squeeze: Gently squeeze the nipple with your fingertip and observe for any abnormal discharge.

If you notice any abnormalities during self-examination (such as lumps, deformities, indentations, or discharge), seek immediate assistance from a specialist!

◎Mammography

Free mammograms are available with any United States health insurance plan if you meet specific requirements. The National Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program, the Susan G. Komen Foundation, and local Breast Cancer Awareness events offer free or reduced-cost mammograms to low-income and uninsured people. (source: https://reurl.cc/A00Go3)

◎Breast ultrasound

Women under 45, those who have detected breast lumps during palpation, or those who require regular monitoring of breast conditions can undergo non-invasive breast ultrasound examinations. If any abnormalities are found, further in-depth testing can be conducted.

▋ How to Prevent Breast Cancer

·         Maintain a regular exercise routine

·         Reduce the intake of high-sugar and high-fat foods

·         Avoid exposure to environmental hormones

·         Regularly undergo breast cancer prevention and screening

October is International Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and ME30 invites you to respond to the motto of "Early Prevention, Early Detection, Early Treatment." Through regular breast cancer screening and maintaining a healthy lifestyle, we can reduce the threat of breast cancer to our lives.
